It happened in Poland.
When a king, Eric, ruled the country,
a man of duke Bashaw committed high
treason and was sentenced to life imprisonment,
being in jail.

에릭이라는 왕이 나라를 다스리던 때,
바사 공작이라는 사람이 반역죄를 저질러
종신형을 선고받고 감옥에 수감되어 있었습니다.
He had a beautiful wife called Catherine Sigello.
Duke Bashaw always spent blue days thinking
his wife while he was constrained in the prison.
그에겐 카타리나 지겔로라는 아름다운 부인이
있었습니다. 바사공작은 감옥에 수감되어 있으면서
늘 부인을 생각하며 우울한 나날을 보냈습니다.
One day, Catherine visited the king,
begging him to consider for her to serve her
husband’s term in prison together.
어느 날 카타리나는 왕을 찾아가 자신도 남편의
형기를 함께 복역할 수 있도록 배려해 달라고
간절히 부탁했습니다.
“Madam, don’t you know the meaning of life sentence?
It means that if you are confined in prison,
you never see the brilliant sun and the
beautiful sky again. And your husband is no longer a duke.
He is guilty of high treason and nothing
but an ordinary commoner.
And yet, you request me?”
King Eric asked Catherine, startled.
"부인, 종신형의 뜻을 모르오?
한번 감옥에 갇히면 다시는 빛나는 태양도
아름다운 하늘도 볼 수 없음을 의미하오.
그리고 부인의 남편은 더 이상 공작이 아니오.
그는 반역죄인이며 평범한 평민일 뿐이오.
그런데도 내게 부탁을 하는 것이오?"
에릭왕은 깜짝 놀라며 카타리나에게 물었습니다.
“I know. Your Majesty! Whether he is guilty or innocent,
a duke or a prisoner, He is always my husband.
Catherine answered in a quiet tone.
"알고 있답니다. 폐하! 하지만 유죄든 무죄든
공작이든 죄수이든 그는 언제까지나 제 남편이랍니다."
카타리나는 담담한 목소리로 대답했습니다.
“But you don’t have to be ardently attached to
the conjugal ties any more.
Anyone doesn’t accuse you of a crime.
Your husband is a criminal, but you are free.
Do you mean you will give it up?
Eric wanted to persuade this beautiful lady as far as he can and let her go back home.
"하지만 부인은 더 이상 부부의 인연에
연연할 필요가 없지 않소,
누구도 당신에게 죄를 물을 사람은 없소.
남편은 죄인이지만 당신은 자유요.
그것을 포기하겠단 말이오?"
에릭은 어떡하든 이 아름다운 부인을
설득해 집으로 돌려보내고 싶었습니다.
But she was resolute. At last, she
pulled out the ring that she put on and showed it
to the king. And said this.
그러나 그녀는 막무가내였습니다.
마침내 그녀는 손가락에 끼고 있던 반지를
꺼내 왕 앞에 내놓았습니다.
그리곤 다음과 같이 말했습니다.
“Two words in Latin are engraved on the ring.
Mors sola, we are one until we die like these words.
Reluctantly, the king could not but grant her request.
"이 반지에는 라틴어로 두 마디가 새겨져 있답니다.
Mors sola, 이 말이 뜻하는 것처럼
우린 죽을 때까지 한 몸입니다."
왕은 하는 수없이 그녀의 부탁을 들어줄 수밖에
없었습니다.
Sending her down to a dungeon where there was no a ray of light,
the king shook his head.
But he could not help admiring her beautiful love toward her husband.
Her love was so truthful and beautiful
as to give up the freedom and glories of
herself for her husband.
한줄기 빛도 스며들지 않는 지하감옥으로
그녀를 내려 보내며 왕은 절레절레 고개를 흔들었지만
남편을 향한 그녀의 아름다운 사랑에는
감복하지 않을 수 없었습니다.
남편을 따라 스스로의 자유와 영화를 포기할 만큼
그녀의 사랑은 진실 되고 아름다웠던 것입니다.
17 years later, when king Eric died.
Catherine was released with her husband and could break loose at last.
17년 후 에릭왕이 죽자,
카타리나는 남편과 함께 석방되어 마침내
자유의 몸이 될 수 있었습니다.
